British scientists have found high levels of saturated fats in the blood do serious damage to health. Experiments on mice showed that the accumulation of excess fat related to white blood cells, called monocytes migrate from the blood into the tissues and organs. They believe that the cells 'migration' can disrupt the immune system, cause serious heart disease. Recent evidence suggests that it is also the main reason leading to the development and spread of cancer.
These findings contribute to warn people about eating too much food containing saturated fats, such as pastries, biscuits, fat meat and dairy products will impact significantly on health.
Dr. Kevin Woollard, from Imperial College London, who led the Wellcome Trust research report published in the journal Cell, said: "We think that maintaining a concentration of saturated fats by frequent snacks such as cakes, biscuits, meat fat ... can cause the displacement of monocytes, cause of cardiovascular disease. "
In the UK, more than half of men and women are overweight or obese. Heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK. "However, a key finding is that the monocytes are the same type. That means we can develop drugs to change this situation," Dr Woollard said.
